Shockwave Therapy for Heel & Foot Pain
A non-invasive treatment designed to stimulate healing and reduce chronic pain
If you’re struggling with persistent heel or foot pain that hasn’t improved with rest, stretching, orthotics, or other conservative treatments, shockwave therapy may be an effective next step.
What Is Shockwave Therapy?
Shockwave therapy is a non-surgical, non-invasive treatment that uses targeted acoustic (sound) waves to stimulate the body’s natural healing process. These sound waves increase blood flow, encourage tissue regeneration, and help break up chronic inflammation in damaged tissues.
It is commonly used for chronic foot and heel pain and does <>not involve injections, anesthesia, or downtime—making it a convenient option for many patients.
Conditions Commonly Treated
Shockwave therapy may be recommended for a variety of foot and ankle conditions, including:
-
Plantar fasciitis and chronic heel pain
-
Achilles tendon pain
-
Chronic foot pain
-
Tendon and soft tissue injuries of the foot and ankle
Your clinician will evaluate your symptoms and medical history to determine whether shockwave therapy is appropriate for your specific condition.
What to Expect During Treatment
Shockwave therapy sessions are quick and performed in the office.
-
Treatment time: 5–10 minutes per foot
-
Frequency: Once per week
-
Typical course: 3–5 sessions
-
Sensation: A tapping or pressure feeling during treatment
-
After effects: Mild soreness may occur for 24–48 hours
Most patients are able to return to normal activities immediately after treatment.
Is Shockwave Therapy Safe?
Yes. Shockwave therapy has been used worldwide in podiatry and sports medicine for many years and is considered a safe, non-invasive treatment when performed by a trained clinician.
Not every patient is a candidate. Your clinician will review your medical history and condition before recommending shockwave therapy as part of your treatment plan.
After Your Treatment
After shockwave therapy, most patients can return to normal daily activities right away. To support optimal healing, we recommend:
-
Walk and perform daily activities as tolerated
-
Avoid high-impact exercise for 48 hours
-
Avoid anti-inflammatory medications for 48 hours, as they may interfere with the healing response
-
Continue stretching and using orthotics if prescribed
Mild soreness may occur and typically resolves within 24–48 hours.
Is Shockwave Therapy Right for You?
Shockwave therapy is often recommended for patients whose foot or heel pain has not fully responded to conservative treatments such as rest, stretching, orthotics, or physical therapy.
Your clinician will evaluate your symptoms, medical history, and treatment goals to determine whether shockwave therapy is an appropriate option for you.
